What a year!

In 2017, HBI became an organization truly focused on building solid, health and well-being bridges for future generations. From our humble beginnings of short-term campaigns and volunteer-led projects, we are now an organization that is developing models for service delivery to underserved women and children, and linking these models to pathways for growth and expansion.

Through Advocacy, Collaboration, and Service, driven by the kindness and ongoing support of our generous donors, we have built historic partnerships and groundbreaking programs - assuring opportunities for each community we serve to source their own future. A few highlights you helped us achieve in 2017:
  • Launched a 3-year train-the-trainer program for pre-hospital and hospital providers in emergency care delivery in the city of Arequipa - alongside partners from Northwell Hospital System, Echo Medical Group, and The National Firefighters Association of Perú.
  • Provided health and hygiene education, dental care, and targeted health services to over 500 children in underserved communities around Perú.
  • Supported efforts on the ground to soften the effects of mass flooding and infrastructure damage, offering needed food, water, hygiene supplies, diapers, and cleaning supplies.
  • Advanced a 5-year agreement with the Peruvian College of Obstetrics to bring neonatal resuscitation training to midwives and nurses throughout Perú. In 2017 we completed 42 NRP workshops with 650 participants and trained 27 new NRP trainers to further integrate our train-the-trainer program for advancing NRP skills and saving babies lives at birth.
  • Solidified The Ines Project for Medically Fragile Children, working with local health ambassadors to provide care and advocacy for medically fragile children and their families.
  • Tested a web-based health monitoring system for use with programs that serve former street youth, allowing us to monitor vulnerable youth and provide holistic care and integrated health assessments.
  • Partnered with Peruvian organizations to provide evidence based training and skills advancement for over 500 physicians, nurses, and midwives working in underserved areas.
  • Constructed a Tuberculosis Room with the Peruvian Ministry of Health in an underserved area of Alto Cayma, Perú - helping to expand the screening, treatment, and ongoing management of TB patients.
  • Collaborated with Linfield College of nurses to research the efficacy of partnering international nursing students in a service learning environment and the effects on their vocational trajectory.
Where do we go from here? Thanks to your generosity and ongoing support, we have built lasting bridges to improve health and opportunity for marginalized individuals and communities. And, the future is going to be filled with even more.

Stay tuned and please keep building bridges . . . one person at a time.

Thank you for your continued support in the work of HBI.

"Working with HBI and their team has taught me that a group of committed people truly can change the world.”

- 2017 Team Perú trip participant
The joy and peace this experience brings me is hard to put into words. If I had to choose between this type of a vacation vs the typical vacations we think of, I would choose to spend my time with HBI-without a doubt.

Truly a first class organization - well-run, organized, and just the right people in their positions!

A Few Highlights from 2017

Picture

Broadened Our Impact

We broadened our message of collaboration and partnerships around the world. Through an official invitation, we took the bridge building vision of HBI to the Vatican. Through a conscious decision to grow our partnerships and expand the impact and influence of our Ines Project for Medically Fragile Children, we attended a conference and a congress with organizations and leaders from around the globe.

Inspired the Next Generation

We continued our commitment to expand service learning opportunities for students from diverse environments and settings to unite in a common effort to serve. Through collaborations with universities and colleges, we .brought together the next generation of change agents.

Expanded Our Efforts

Expanded our efforts to build evidence-based, scientifically validated models of service delivery and training support. Through collaboration with established subject matter experts, on-the-ground partners and other NGOs - we refined our neonatal resuscitation training program model, increased the impact of our first responder training program and increased the influence of our Ines Program for Medically Fragile Children.
