In just one week, we will be hosting a diverse team of volunteers from around the U.S. and U.K. for our Team Perú summer outreach project.
The trip started as a social outreach mission and has grown over the years to be linked strongly with HBI’s ongoing “bridge building” projects. The Team Perú outreach trips are a combination of public health activities, minor construction projects in support of our in-country partners, and social outreach programs.
Throughout the two-plus decades of outreach, hundreds of people have participated in Team Perú trip and report a rich experience. The outreach trips are very demanding and involve a significant commitment of time, emotional and physical energy and personal resources, so we want to take advantage of this time the best we can!
The trips offer a unique opportunity for a volunteer to deeply immerse themselves into a community and work side-by-side with a diverse group of colleagues on meaningful projects. Each trip has a slightly different focus - but the objective remains the same, building bridges with our partners, international volunteers, the people and communities we serve and ourselves. In a very real way - the Team Perú trips are an in-reach trip that offers deep personal exploration just as much as service out-reach.
The Team Perú trips provide a meaningful way for volunteers to take their passion for "making the world a better place" - and apply it to a sustainable, ongoing social justice movement. The trips provide a mechanism for people to take their convictions and beliefs and connect them with actions. The trips provide an opportunity to think deeply about culture, class and privilege. As my wife is found of saying, the Team Perú trips are an adult summer camp experience that pushes people to examine a number of aspects of their lives and their beliefs.
The learnings from the trips don't stop in Perú - over the years we've heard from a number of volunteers who have returned from the Team Perú trips and implemented their new awareness into local programs and projects.
We're proud of our many years of Team Perú outreach trips and the hundreds of volunteers who have joined us. We look forward to another amazing trip . . . filled with learnings, insights and tremendous growth. Sounds like a great trip!
