The reality of the past 18-months has still not fully set-in. There is a dissonance in the air, as we race to find our new normal and continue to struggle with the ever-changing landscape of COVID-19.
One thing has been very different for me - my travel. From frequent trips to-and-fro Lima pre-pandemic, to not having been in the country since March of 2020. The daily structure and activities of our organization have changed considerably over the past year.
Our team of incredibly capable staff have been amazing. They've taken on new roles, stepped up to assume new leadership, and made sure our efforts over the past year have been meaningful and squarely aligned with our mission. It has been a true testament to their can-do attitude that we've actually grown over the pandemic in terms of our programs and impact.
I am honored to be a part of such an amazing team and an outstanding group of people. I miss them terribly. It is with this in mind that I am happy to announce I will be taking my first trip back to Perú on August 06. I'm so excited and a little apprehensive.
We're taking every precaution to minimize the risk of spread. I will only be meeting with our staff who have been vaccinated. We will be driving as much as possible in private cars to decrease our exposure. Our goal for this trip is reconnection. I'll be traveling to the Casa Girasoles, but only for very short visits - as none of the boys are vaccinated.
Thanks to the generosity of so many - I will be transporting a number of items . . . clothes and shoes for the Casa Girasoles, school supplies for the Ines Project, equipment for the team. We are also taking three bikes for the Girasoles Cycling Team in Ica. It will be Christmas in August.
My bags are packed and I am ready to go. It has been a long time and I am so excited to reconnect with our team, the boys and the country I love so much. Stay tuned for photos and updates from the trip - and thank you for all your ongoing support.
