After clearing immigration and customs, connecting with our faithful driver Sr. Javier, and making our way through the busy Friday evening streets of Lima, I arrived at the HBI offices around 11 pm. Much to my delight, Srta. Carmen brought me a birthday dinner (August 6th is my birthday) of my favorite pollo a la brasa and a lovely pale ale from Sierra Andina (thanks Ted Alexander). Talk about the perfect birthday dinner.
This morning I spent some time unpacking and reacquainting myself to our office and the neighborhood. So much has changed. And yet, so much has remained the same. Although is has been over a year since my last trip to Perú - it some ways it feels like I was here last week.
This afternoon, I went for a run along the Costa Verde. Although the cool sea air and coarse sand remain unchanged, there has a been a fair amount of beautification. In fact, in one area - a sort of connector zone between the neighborhoods of Magdalena and San Isidro - an entire forest of trees has been planted.
Tonight Srta. Carmen and Dr. Roberto are coming to the office. We are all vaccinated. It will be a special evening to reconnect and share a meal. I have missed them terribly.
Tomorrow, bright and early, I head to Arequipa . . . and then the adventure truly begins. Stay tuned for more photos and video.
It is so good to be back. It feels like such a gift to be here.
