HBI is strongly committed to helping healthcare providers identify and structure placement in developing nation clinics and hospitals. Our first placement clinic is the Policlinico Maria Madre de la Misiones in Arequipa, Peru. The volunteer experience with the Mission of Alto Cayma and the Policlinico Maria Madre de la Misiones is designed to provide participants with a chance to interact with people of a developing nation. It is our hope that healthcare professionals will volunteer their time to come and learn about the culture and people of Peru. Because volunteer providers work directly alongside Peruvian medical professionals, the major focus is not on the provision of healthcare services. Rather, our hope is that US, Canadian and European doctors and medical providers will create collegial relationships with their Peruvian counterparts and share their talents, passions and commitments to serving the underserved. The goal of the Volunteer Healthcare Provider Program with the Mission of Alto Cayma is not to miraculously cure disease or eradicate disease and suffering; rather we hope to change our own lives through service to others. In observing and responding to the suffering of others, we can change the way that we look at the world. And hopefully, we will come back to our “lives” in the United States, Canada, and Western Europe committed to making a difference in our communities and the environment around us.
Medical professionals who have completed or are enrolled in an accredited residency training program are welcome to apply for a rotation at our clinic in Arequipa at any time of the year. Medical students are encouraged to participate in an annual mission trip, led by Dr. Centrone. Students and health professionals stay at our volunteer house and work in the clinic alongside Peruvian doctors, as well as do outreach to nearby mountain communities. Click on the program link for a full description of our program including the areas of operation, common diseases and health challenges encountered, as well as health recommendations for travelers to Peru.
